Investigation into Jontay Porter’s Potential Link to Sports Betting Irregularities

Is Jontay Porter linked to irregularities around sports betting? This is the whole subject of an investigation that the NBA is conducting, as revealed by ESPN Monday, around the interior of the Toronto Raptors (24 years old), beneficiary of a two-way contract with the Canadian franchise since the start of the season. These irregularities concern the ratings around his performances during two matches, played on January 26 and March 20, specifies ESPN.

During the first, against the Clippers, a bet proposed to bet on the fact that Porter would succeed, or not, in passing 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.5 3-point baskets ( his averages at that time being 4.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 0.7 long-range field goal). Before the match there would have been an abnormal number of bets that he wouldn’t make it. And, that evening, he only played four minutes (0 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist) before stopping, after an eye injury worsened, according to his team.

He is not expected to play again until the end of the season

Second game, against Sacramento: the bet offered less than 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds from the player. Porter only played three minutes, was ill (according to his team), had two rebounds and scored no points. Both times, betting company Draftkings reported that “Porter won’t hit these numbers” bets were the ones that brought in the most money for bettors on the night.

The pivot, brother of Denver player Michael Porter Jr, did not play the Raptors’ last two matches, the first for “personal reasons”, the second simply forfeited, with a return date scheduled for April 14, i.e. end of the regular season (Toronto probably not playing in the play-offs). He should therefore not play again this season, where he averages 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

The NBA prohibits all its employees from betting on League events, under penalty of violations ranging from fines to contract termination.
