Interpreter Scandal: Shohei Ohtani’s Betrayal Rocks the Baseball World

Shohei Ohtani is the most influential figure in baseball today and therefore each news about the Japanese takes on a significant stir. This week it was learned that the Los Angeles Dodgers had fired his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, for having scammed the player.

According to various media reports, the interpreter would have sent $4.5 million from Ohtani’s bank account to a betting house in Southern California. However, the translator assured that he never bet on baseball games.

“I never bet on baseball,” Mizuhara said. “That’s 100 percent. I knew that rule. … We have a meeting about that in spring training.”

Initially, a spokesperson for Ohtani told ESPN that the slugger had transferred the funds to cover Mizuhara’s gambling debt. The spokesperson brought Mizuhara to ESPN for a 90-minute interview this week, during which Mizuhara laid out his story in great detail.

ESPN had reviewed banking information that showed Ohtani’s name in two payments of $500,000 sent in September and October, which leaves the interpreter in a very bad position.

While sports betting is legal in nearly 40 states, it remains illegal in California. Government-regulated betting houses require bettors to prepay for their bets, while illegal betting houses accept credit. For this reason you would be committing a crime in Los Angeles.
