Injury setback may cost Oswald Peraza spot on Yankees’ Opening Day roster

Oswald Peraza had a great chance of landing a spot on the New York Yankees’ Opening Day roster, taking into account that the team needs a player who can play multiple positions. However, an injury seems to ruin his plans.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told journalist Joel Sherman that the infielder’s pain has returned and that he is undergoing tests to determine the severity of the injury.

Peraza was sidelined from Feb. 25 until Tuesday due to shoulder tightness. He then played second base on Tuesday and shortstop on Wednesday in Grapefruit League action, but felt sore again after that game.

Given this scenario and with a complete infield, the infielder will surely begin the campaign again in Triple A, as happened last year, since the top brass of the coaching staff wants the player to stay in tune.

With Peraza dealing with a shoulder issue, this could clear the way for Oswaldo Cabrera to earn a spot on the Major League roster as a utility man for the Bronx team.

Peraza, who not long ago was a top prospect in the Yankees system, lost the starting shortstop job to Anthony Volpe in Spring Training last year.
