The week of pure activity in Lawn Tennis, with the dispute of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments, did not end as expected. After being postponed on Sunday due to rain, the M25 and W15 finals were definitively canceled due to inclement weather, and there will be no champions. In this way, the finalists (the Kazakh Dmitry Popko and the Brazilian Pedro Sakamoto among men, and the Paraguayan Ana Paula Neffa de los Ríos and the Italian Verena Melissa among the ladies) will receive the points, and the financial prizes, which correspond, precisely, to those who reach the decisive stage of the contest.

“There was mud on the sides, and the integrity of the players had to be taken care of. The decision was to take care of integrity, first, and second, due to a calendar issue, it was no longer possible, they had to travel. The four finalists did very well, with the bitter taste, like us, that the finals were not concluded,” he told LA GACETA. Augusto Arquezpresident of the Tucumán Tennis Association.

Beyond this final bitter pill, which is not minor, the organizers made a positive assessment of a new international event in the province, and predict that more competitions of this type will be held again in Tucumán.

“In organization it is the best we have done. I have no complaints with the fields, nor with the club, nor with the players, who went overboard, worked tirelessly since Sunday of last week, doing a tremendous job, just like the guys in the organization,” Arquez added.

For its part, Mercedes Paz, also part of the organizing team, highlighted that the players expressed positive feelings about the tournament, and above all, about the warmth of the people. “Everyone left very happy with the level of hospitality of the people of Tucumán, the kindness. That makes us proud as hosts,” he stressed, while also highlighting that Argentine tennis players “value, above all, the possibility of having these tournaments in the country, because today traveling is very difficult.”

And both anticipated that it is more than likely that there will be new international events in the province this year.

“We are trying to move to another, more important level of tournament. There are very good possibilities of having a larger tournament,” said Arquez. This is due to compliance with the tournaments that are being held in Tucumán, and to the good relationship that exists with the Argentine Tennis Association. In addition, he mentioned that Atlético or San Martín could host an event in the future (“there are the proposals, we are analyzing”).
