Iga Swiatek’s Winning Mindset: “I Focus on the Process, Not the Results”

Iga Swiatek finds no rival in Indian Wells. After beating Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-1, the Pole goes straight to winning her second title in California. However, the number one prefers to be cautious and she speaks at a press conference about the thoughts that lurk when she has the possibility of winning a tournament.

– When you are aware that you can win a tournament

“I wouldn’t say that those thoughts don’t appear, because they do. The main question is what are you going to do with them? Are you really going to focus on it or are you really going to take it step by step and remember that you still have work to do?” do. So I think I’m pretty good at doing the latter. I focus on the process, not the results.”

– Your best attributes

“I would say that, in general, intensity, discipline and my topspin. As for intensity, she needed to learn to balance it. I remember, when I was younger, she was more of a defensive player, and when I started working with Tomasz, she taught me to be more aggressive, but then you have to balance it. I had to learn how to use it. Discipline came when Daria joined the team and taught me to concentrate more and focus on the right things. Because I remember when I was younger she was out of my mind, otherwise, and she didn’t have the skills yet to be so disciplined.”

– About his technical change in the serve

“Honestly, I don’t think the process is over yet, because it’s not easy to change technique, but we are trying to make the movement more soft and short. I don’t have to think about it. Still, muscle memory works in the long term, so I need to work on it. It’s quite normal, but during the game I don’t think about it. I think it would be wrong to have to think about it. “You want to focus on other things.”

– Your organization in life off the slopes

“I do it a little bit, but sometimes it doesn’t make sense because you never know how long you’re going to be in the tournament. I do it, but on the other hand I’ve tried be flexible and don’t plan everythingbecause there is no point in worrying too much.”

On the importance of adapting to the balls

“Without a doubt, adapting to the balls and the surface, It is the most important thing in our sport. It was always quite complicated here. The balls were always very different from those in other tournaments. But I got used to them. I’m not sure if we play with ATP balls now, because Taylor Fritz told me at the beginning of the tournament that he thought they played with WTA balls. So I’m confused. But I dont care. I like the ball. I would say it’s more about the air and the conditions here. So it’s going well for me, and it doesn’t make sense for me to overanalyze it,” says the number one who seems to have no impediment to taking the title, although Maria Sakkari will have the last word.
