‘I don’t think 10 million is a lot’

No trainer was able to get him started at Ajax, but Owen Wijndal has impressed this season at Antwerp FC. The left back has a permanent starting position in Mark van Bommel’s team and is appointed by the Gazette of Antwerp called ‘the man in shape’. In an interview with the newspaper, Wijndal says he feels good in Belgium.

The eleven-time Dutch international is asked how far he is from the footballer for whom Ajax paid a sum of ten million euros in 2022. “That’s hard to say. I’m feeling good. And fit,” he refers to ankle complaints that he was struggling with before the winter break. “Let’s say I’m close to the level I reached at AZ.”

Wijndal is rented from Ajax, where he could never live up to his price tag. According to some, the ten million euros is a waste of money. “I don’t really care what others say about me. A lot has changed at Ajax in a short time. That still haunts the club. I’m just trying to show that I have enough to offer to be in the starting line-up, both at Antwerp and Ajax. And as for that price tag… I didn’t think ten million was a lot,” he says, laughing.

His move to Antwerp has proven to be a good choice. “Yes, also because I really enjoy it here. Of course I still follow Ajax. Whenever I can, I watch. There are some guys I speak to every day: Brian Brobbey, Kenneth Taylor, Stevie Bergwijn, the captain. Of course, I am also concerned about the turbulent times they experience, because they are my friends. And I am still under contract with Ajax until 2027. I still wish the club everything. Hopefully they can climb a few more places in the competition.”
