Holger Rune wants to continue with this good energy in Indian Wells after finishing the semifinal in Acapulco. How does it feel to return to the slopes of Indian Wells? “It feels great to be back. It’s the first ATP event I’m playing in for the fourth time, so it’s a special feeling to be here again. They offered me a wildcard the first time I came and it is a pleasure to be in this magnificent place and try to play the best tennis possible.”said a friendly Rune.
And in 2024, the 20-year-old has already reached two semi-finals: the first in Montpellier and the second recently in Acapulco. In Mexico is where you have felt best, but how do you rate your start to the year?: “I think it went well. Obviously I want to do better in the next tournaments, but I have reached a couple of semi-finals. We’ve only had two months, there’s a lot of season ahead of us. I’m playing better and better. I had a good week in Acapulco and that’s something to build on. I’m feeling good on the court, which is great.”.
And Rune is clear about its philosophy: to be better every day. And for that he will have to face the best players we can find in this Masters 1000 tournament. The reality is that, since he is not at his best, this will be a very big challenge, so he will need to get on with smaller rivals. Your desire for him? Win Indian Wells or Miami, or both, but do so after achieving an evolution in your tennis: “I hope to win, I hope so. Mainly I try to improve my game. They are two tournaments in which we have the best players in the world and we have legends like Novak. My goal is to play better every game. “I’m very far from finished, I’m just trying to evolve every day.”
In the right direction
And what will he have to do to sign this evolution? Well, the Dane wants to build on his performance in the Acapulco tournament, because he believes that that was the moment he realized that his tennis was on the right track. Fight and never stop trying, with patience and faith: “The things I did in Acapulco were in the right direction of where I want to go. I had many chances to close that semifinal, but this is sport. Sometimes it ends up on your side and sometimes it doesn’t. You just have to keep building and keep improving. As long as you’re going in the right direction, that’s the most important thing. “You have to be patient and trust the process.”
