Highlights from Day 1 of the Grand Slam Antalya 2024 Judo World Tour

The curtain fell on first day of the Grand Slam Antalya 2024seventh seasonal event of Judo World Tour and fourth tournament of an extremely intense March. The Turkish city will be the North Star of the tatami this weekend for 628 athletes from 93 different countries, with Italy having great ambitions. On this day-1 five weight categories were involved: -48 kg, -52 kg and -57 kg women; -60 kg and 66 kg men.

In the women’s -48 kg, the spotlight is on Assunta Scutton.1 in the world, who wanted to counter the Japanese Natsumi Tsunoda, favorite of the day before. For the Italian judoka, however, everything ended in the round of 16. After defeating the German Katharina Menz, Scutto was surprised by the Turk Sila Ersin, victorious in the Golden Score for Koshi-waza / Tsuri-goshi. Ersin who was Tsunoda’s challenger in the final act, but the Japanese confirmed her reference status.

Also credited with the first seeding Odette Giuffrida in the -52 kg range and, in this case, predictions respected for the expected path. Giuffrida, in fact, was able to impose herself against the Indian Shraddha Kadubal Chopade (tre shido), the tedesca Annika Wurfel (ippon per Kansetsu-waza / Ude-garami) e l’uzbeka Sita Kadamboeva (Ashi-waza / O-uchi-gari), before meeting the dominator of the circuit, the Japanese Uta Abe. The Asian asserted her superiority, given the Osaekomi-waza / Ushiro-kesa-gatame and the Osaekomi-waza / Tate-shiho-gatame, which led to the ippon after 2’28”. Giuffrida, therefore, played her chances in the challenge for third place against the Croatian Ana Viktorija Puljiz, but the three shidos were not favorable to her. A category therefore where there was Abe’s triumph, victorious in the Final against the British Chelsie Giles.

Not very lucky for Veronica Toniolo and Thauany David Capanni Dias in the women’s -57 kg. The n.4 of the seeding, after having prevailed against the Russian Olga Mukhinaraised the white flag in front of the Frenchwoman Faiza Mokdar for ippon (Kansetsu-waza / Juji-gatame). Stop in the round of 16 also for Capanni Dias: victorious against the Bosnian Andjela Samardzic and the Indian Yamini Mauryaour standard bearer had to surrender to the Brazilian Jessica Lima for a Hasoku-Make. In this category there was success for the Canadian Christa Deguchiwhich won against Lima in the final match.

Coming to the men, after seeing the scoreboard there had already been talk of a challenging course in the -60 kg per Andrea Carlino and Angelo Pantano. For both there was a stop in the round of 16. Carlino, victorious against the Uzbek DOston Ruziev and the representative of Guatemala, Jose Ramoscouldn’t do much against the fearsome Turk Salih Yildiz (Ashi-waza / Ko-soto-gari e Waza-ari-awasete-ippon). Pantano, invece, è stato piegato dall’uzbeko Dilshodbek Baratov, after the victory against the Indian Yadav, for a Te-waza / Seoi-otoshi. Final victory for the Russian Ayub Bliev.

In the -66 kg men Elios Manzi did not make too much progress, given the less than positive outcome of the second round against the standard-bearer of Tajikistan, Nurali Emomali, who beat the Italian with an ippon after 49″. Japan is still celebrating thanks to the absolute success of Hifumi Abewho won the Final against Emomali.
