Kiel receives a nasty derby slap against Flensburg – the highlights in the video

What a bitter game for THW Kiel: The “Zebras” suffered their worst Bundesliga home defeat against their rivals in the 110th northern derby against SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Flensburg consolidates third place in the table and keeps the pressure on the top duo Füchse Berlin and SC Magdeburg. The highlights in the video.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt prevailed over their arch rivals from Kiel with 33:26. The 40th success in the North Classic is also the highest in the opponent’s hall and at the same time an impressive demonstration of power.

The Bundesliga handball players from SG Flensburg-Handewitt clearly won the 110th Schleswig-Holstein derby against THW Kiel. The 33:26 (13:10) away win was the SG’s 40th success and also the highest in the Kiel Arena. The best throwers were Patrick Wiencek and Petter Överby with four goals each for Kiel and Johannes Golla with nine goals for SG.

With 39:11 points, Flensburg remains third in the table. The THW fell back to fifth place with 34:14 points and can probably write off a Champions League start in the coming season after the disappointment.

“It’s one of the most special games you can experience in handball,” says Golla before the throw-off. Kiel’s coach Filip Jicha also saw it this way: “I envy my players that they get to play this game. You don’t have to say much before a game like this, the boys are hot enough, you just have to slow them down.”

The hosts had to do without Hendrik Pekeler at short notice. The defense specialist suffered a foot injury during training. After a bad start by both teams, the guests from Flensburg found their rhythm better. National team captain Golla scored in the twelfth minute to make it 6:3 for the SG, Austrian Boris Zivkovic increased the score to 13:8 for the guests with his first derby goal (29th minute).

Flensburg turns up the heat in the final phase

With five goals in a row, Kiel equalized to 13:13 two minutes after the break. Now the game, which was rather unspectacular in the first half, really took off. The Flensburg team fended off the onslaught of their arch-rivals and were ahead again by five goals after Jim Gottfridsson made it 22:17 (42nd). THW coach Jicha took his last time out in the 50th minute. But that didn’t change anything about Flensburg’s victory in the Northern Classic. In the final phase, Flensburg pulled further and further away and finally won clearly by seven goals.
