The setting was fantastic: 12,000 spectators attended the biggest basketball event in Hamburg of all time on Sunday. From Hamburg Towers’ perspective, the result did not fit. In its anniversary game, the Bundesliga team was narrowly defeated by FC Bayern Munich by 80:81 (73:73, 34:38).
When the number of spectators was announced in the arena in Volkspark, cheers erupted. It was a new record for the Hanseatic city. The previous one was from 2006, when the German national team with Dirk Nowitzki attracted 10,925 spectators in the test match against Canada. However, the “Towers” were denied a surprise in the catch-up game on matchday 22 against FCB.
Due to the unfortunate defeat, the eleventh in the current Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) season, the record against Bayern is now also negative. Of the nine games against Munich, five were lost.

Towers only has a slim chance of reaching the quarter-finals
There are still eleven games on the program for Hamburg in the main round. But it can already be said that it will be very difficult for them to reach the quarter-finals directly. Because of a change in mode, there are only six direct tickets available after the 34 main round match days.

Towers in light blue “Signature Jersey”
Towers coach Barloschky’s team played against FCB in a special outfit. A “signature jersey” was designed especially for the game. The exclusive, light blue jersey contained the printed signatures of all 128 players and coaches of the professional team over the past ten years.
Hamburg starts the game well…
The Towers started courageously against the Euroleague participant and led 17:12 after the first quarter. But they went into the break with a score of 34:38. After the third quarter, in which the hosts rarely hit the target with their shots and also made a few mistakes in building up the game, they were eight points behind (48:56). But: The “Towers” came close again in the final quarter. A good minute before the final siren, the score was 65:68 and the deficit was only three points. Suddenly a surprise was possible again.
…and fights for extra time
And it came to a head – because William Christmas shortened the score to 70:71 with a three-pointer. Bayern pulled away again. Eight seconds before the final siren, Hamburg had possession of the ball at 70:73. And Brae Ivey did it, he scored the equalizer from outside with 5.7 seconds before the end. Bayern missed their chance to win – extra time! And that’s when things got exciting.
With the score at 80:81, the hosts had possession of the ball again 20 seconds before the end. But ex-NBA star Serge Ibaka blocked Aljami Durham’s last throw and secured victory for the Munich team. The Towers were denied a happy ending on this special day. Munich is now leader of the table. The Towers’ best thrower was Christmas (18 points).
