Gold Medalist Mélodie Sanchez Shines in Disabled Sports with Compound Bow Victory

It is true that Mélodie Sanchez is a regular on the podiums but one more, and not the least, did her even more good. Regional champion, this year, she hoped to do something at the national which took place on March 16, 2024. And she can be satisfied since she won a gold medal in the federal category in the compound bow in disabled sports: “Two years ago, I had already won gold but it was outdoors! »

“My best performance joins the best of the able-bodied”

It must be said that, that year, she was alone in her category. This time, there were four women: “There was already a qualifying shoot where we had to shoot three arrows in less than two minutes and this for twenty times and after that, it was duels. I did particularly well on the last one since I had my best performance with 147 points out of 150. This ranks with the best of the able-bodied! »

As her disability was not considered serious enough, she could not compete in the international category and had to settle for the federal category. “If I was in the other one, I could participate in the Olympics. The national classifier was present at the competition and I took the opportunity to redo my file but it still did not pass. »

Compound bow lover

Still, she savored this victory which reassures her in the idea of having done the right thing in stopping the classic shot to take the compound shot, which is much less physical on the arms: “I had to give up because I had pain in my back and legs. I finally fell in love with the compound bow and it worked out pretty well for me. »

A leg shorter than the other which causes hip problems prevents him from competing on equal terms with the able-bodied. But her passion is intact and she trains three times a week in Issoudun or at home, near Châteauneuf-sur-Cher: “My partner and I have a farmhouse that we have converted. In the kitchen, there is a target and we shoot from the living room. There are only 14 meters instead of the regulatory 15 meters but that’s already good. Outside, we installed it in the garden where we needed 50 meters. »

Which is also ideal for working on the next meeting which will take place in July, outdoors, in Saint-Avertin (Indre-et-Loire). “I won last year outdoors. I’m going to try to repeat it but it’s harder because you have to play with the wind! »

Objective doubled

And even if the target is double that in the gym, which is the equivalent of a 10 cent coin, it remains very small.

With six hours of weekly training alongside her coach who is none other than her companion, Laurent Orgeret, Mélodie, who is just 30 years old, has many good years ahead of her. “In addition, I took a bit of a break this year because I am taking a CAP to be a jeweler. Until now, I was a polisher and I wanted to progress. But I still have to do my workouts because I love it! »

A passion that has lasted for 22 years and which, for this perfectionist, does not seem likely to stop any time soon. This year, she is aiming for a double, indoor and outdoor. Nothing seems impossible to him.
