Rome, 21 March. (Adnkronos) – “At the moment in which I was still ‘crawling’ on the track and had not yet stopped from the fall, I was almost unable to think of anything, pervaded by a sense of enormous dismay and sorrow, it was difficult for me to once coaches and trainers rushed to tell him I broke my tibia, I hurt myself. For the first 20 days I saw everything black, I was deeply desperate within myself.” The Italian Sofia Goggia said this in a meeting with the online media 45 days after the injury stoppage. “I know that there are far worse tragedies in the world, but for an athlete to break a leg there is nothing more difficult than having to deal with an injury, for me it is not the first but it was my seventh operation. How did I react? I thought that in the world there are worse tragedies than mine. I thought: ‘I’m not under the bombs in Gaza’. I tried to look beyond”, added the sprinter.

“When I saw the words in the statement after the injury ‘I’ll be back this time too’, I thought they were words that I didn’t feel were mine this time. Then I started working, my foot was improving, at home, then the gym, the swimming pool, I I have found my independence. My plans now focus a lot on everyday life but I want to heal and get back on skis for the next season”, added Goggia.

“I wanted to wait until the diagnostic follow-up tests were done, otherwise I wouldn’t find the point in talking. We did these tests last week. In the past I’ve broken bones, but I’ve never had something as complicated as what happened to me on the 5th. February. I broke the tibial pilon transversely in several parts, a very strong compression and torsion trauma and the tibia shattered in several parts. The conditions for the operation were extremely complicated, because the CT scan was very bad and being able to construct it was a feat for the orthopedists. The surgery was a perfect success. An excellent starting point for recovery, but you have to go slowly”, confessed the Italian.

“I have an ‘L’-shaped plate that holds my tibia but since the fracture is so low they made a very long cut to insert the plate. The timeframe for the return? The times are six months, the standard ones, one once the bone is welded and if I have a suitable physique for skiing I can also go earlier, I have often returned earlier, shortening the time, which I don’t want to do now but it doesn’t mean that I have to wait the canonical six months”, explained Goggia .
