Girls and women can and WANT to play hockey too!

Last Saturday, active and energetic girls and women met in one place – in the Ice Hall of the Liepāja Olympic Center to practice their hockey skills on the Girls’ Hockey Day organized by the Latvian Hockey Federation (LHF) and the Liepaja Sports Games School (LSSS)!

More than 30 participants of different ages and with different previous experience in sports and ice hockey, engaged in activities on and off the ice, performed physical training tasks, tried various stick technique tasks and other disciplines.
“I’m glad that so many brave little and big Liepaja girls attended the girls’ hockey day. The girls had a great opportunity to try their hand on the ice and get good emotions. In my opinion, this is a good start, because we saw how many girls are interested and want to play hockey. I really hope that soon we will have our own women’s hockey team in Liepāja!”, says Sabīne Kate Rubīna, a Liepaja resident and player of the Latvian women’s hockey team.
LSSS coach Linards Mazurs-Mago also highlights the hope for the formation of a hockey team in Liepāja: “Positive atmosphere and event full of joy. I was happy that quite a number of girls had come to the hockey day. It is hoped that in the future more girls will join our hockey family, so that in the near future we can form a girls’ team to participate in the Latvian championship”.
Girls’ Hockey Day was created with the aim of promoting the development of women’s hockey and introducing hockey as a healthy lifestyle habit, supporting girls’ involvement in hockey and the creation of a women’s hockey team in Liepāja.
“It is a pleasure to see that the interest in women’s hockey is growing! And it is equally important to see the interest of the sports school and coaches, who create a supportive and development-oriented environment! The regions have the strength and desire to do it: teams like Jelgava, Ogre, Ozolnieki, Talsi, Tukums and Ventspils have already proven this! It is a real pleasure that this day took place in Liepāja! Because Liepāja can become the next city to create its own women’s hockey team!” Agnese Kārkliņa, LHF women’s hockey development project manager.
Thank you to the inspiring participants, players of the Latvian women’s ice hockey team Evelina Kolīte, Madara Saulīte and Sabīna Kate Rubīna, as well as the LSSS coaching staff: Linard Mazur-Mago, Edgar Branci, Edi Butān, Kārlis Liepiņš, Maksim Bogdanov, Māris Miez, Nikolaj Silčonok, Tom Konrād and to Vyacheslav Minaev!
