From Waiting to Exercising: The Opening of a New Sports Center in Nowon-gu, Seoul

“I’ve been waiting so long for a sports center to open near my house. Now I’m going to start exercising, which I’ve been putting off.” This is the story of a citizen I met at the Sanggye-gu Sports Center.

In Nowon-gu, Seoul, the ‘Sanggye-gu Community Sports Center’ was opened near Sanggye Station on March 2, following the Junggye-gu Community Sports Center and the Wolgye-gu Community Sports Center. Sports facilities will continue to be built throughout Nowon-gu in the future. The ‘Gongneung-gu Sports Center’ in the Gongneung area and the ‘Seoul Oullim Sports Center’ for use by the disabled in the Surak-Madeul area are scheduled to open next year in 2025.

The Sanggye-gu Sports Center, which opened this time, was built from 3 floors underground to 6 floors above ground as a redevelopment public contribution project. Main facilities include: ▴ Swimming pool with 4 lanes ▴ Gym including the latest treadmills and step machines ▴ Pilates room with various equipment ▴ Flying yoga room for exercising using hammocks ▴ Cycling & triathlon (triathlon) training center ▴ There is a GX room for small groups and a multi-purpose gymnasium where basketball, table tennis, kendo, badminton, and futsal can be played.

In addition, it is equipped with community spaces for residents, such as ▴ a shared childcare room for preschool infants and their guardians, ▴ the Ihue Center, a care facility for lower elementary school students, and a laundromat.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a healthy city as ‘a city that continuously strives to improve the physical and social environment of the city and all members of the community cooperate with each other to improve the health and quality of life of citizens.’

Based on this definition, Nowon-gu was selected for the ‘2023 Korea Healthy City Award’ and received the honor for five consecutive years. He was recognized for his significant contribution to improving the health and quality of life of residents.

Spring, the season when all things come alive, has arrived. Let’s get out of the house and look around. Throughout Seoul, parks and rivers where you can exercise while enjoying nature, and sports facilities where you can do strength training are closer than you might think. Let’s revitalize your body and mind, which have been shrinking all winter, by enjoying the energy of spring. Yes, it starts now.
