From Gladbach to Bundesliga: Ex-Foal Julian Niehues Makes His Mark

An ex-foal finally makes it into the Bundesliga via a detour!

The foal forge is one of the important pillars at Borussia Mönchengladbach, particularly highlighted by sports director Roland Virkus (57). Young players who absorb the Borussia gene in the youth department and thus develop a different identification with the club should regularly find their way to the professionals.

Gladbach: Sky expert linked ex-foals with a move to the Bundesliga

But Fohlen’s professional breakthrough at Borussia Mönchengladbach doesn’t always happen. Julian Niehues (22) can be cited as an example of this. The 22-year-old moved from Preußen Münster’s youth team to the foal stable in the summer of 2018.

The defensive midfielder was trained there for around three years. He played 46 games for the U19s, and a further 39 appearances in the Regionalliga West for the Borussia U23s.

In the summer of 2021, the Münster native took the next step and joined 1. FC Kaiserslautern. With the third division team at the time, Niehues achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in his debut season.

The ex-foal is now an important regular for the “Red Devils”. Recently there was even praise from Sky expert Torsten Mattuschka (43, GladbachLIVE reported). The 22-year-old’s working paper expires in the summer. The fact that he will not stay in the Palatinate beyond that now seems to be a done deal.

According to information from “Sky”, Niehues will join Gladbach’s current Bundesliga rival Heidenheim in the summer. Accordingly, the contract has already been signed, only the official confirmation from the clubs is still pending.

If 1. FCH were to keep the class in the remaining eight Bundesliga games, the ex-foal would take the next step in his career, including personal promotion to the German football upper echelon.

This would mean that what Mattuschka had initially speculatively suggested during the game between Hannover 96 and Lautern (March 16, 2024) would come true. Next season, Gladbach fans would then have the opportunity to watch Niehues himself in games against the Foals in the Bundesliga.
