French Phenom Victor Wembanyama Hopes for NBA Games in Paris as Spurs Confirm Trip

AUSTIN, Texas, USA. —

Victor Wembanyama sounds like he hopes to play one, or maybe two, NBA games in his native France next season.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich confirmed Sunday night that the Spurs will go to Paris next season, something former Spurs player Tony Parker had revealed to reporters a few weeks ago.

“Let’s go there,” Popovich said. The comment about Paris came after San Antonio beat Brooklyn in Austin, Texas, in what was a home game for the Spurs.

In addition, Wembanyama, the French star and the top favorite to be named the season’s Rookie of the Year, joined. “It’s something I’m really looking forward to.”

The NBA has not announced which teams will be playing in Paris next season, although San Antonio and Indiana are expected to be the selected teams. At last month’s All-Star Game, commissioner Adam Silver said Wembanyama would “love to see” the Spurs play in France next season.

“I can say that we will play a regular-season game in Paris again,” Silver said last month. “There are some discussions going on about which stadium we will play in. Stay tuned for the Spurs who will play in Paris.”

It’s also unclear if it will be a one-game or two-game trip for the Spurs.
