French judoka talks training, Ramadan, and facing Olympic champion Abe

“What is your feeling about finishing third in -66 kg after your success against the Spaniard David Garcia Torne, at this Grand Slam in Antalya?
I’m happy with it, but I’m a little disappointed with this semi-final (lost) once again against Abe (reigning Olympic champion). But I got some information, things are progressing, we know what we have to work on to beat him in Paris.

What do you miss against the Japanese Hifumi Abe?
He gives me a soda, the first one I take a big impact, a little dizzy, want to vomit, a little concussion. A moment of hesitation, when he throws his soda, I don’t feel caught at all, I step back and there he puts on the o-soto-gari (mowing) of which he has the secret. I didn’t feel caught, for that, I’m a little disgusted.

It was your return to competition, two months after the Paris Grand Slam where you finished unranked and injured…
Yes, I ruptured the ligament in my right little finger, a rib and I had a problem with my right shoulder for 2-3 years, now it’s resolved. It had been planned for a long time that I was going to manage the shoulder after Paris.

“I feel good when I do Ramadan. I adapt my training and recharge my batteries with my family (…). When I come out of a well-done Ramadan, I am filled with energy”

Is it still good to face Hifumi Abe in the run-up to the Olympics in Paris this summer?
Yes, we get information, we know what to work on even if the fight was short.

Why not play the European Championships next month in Croatia?
Are the European Championships interesting? We had two Worlds, two Masters last year. We had Europe in November (he finished 3rd), we are going to have others, more Worlds (in May in Abu Dhabi). In less than two years, we have had plenty of official championships, my category is solid in Europe.

So is it better to compete in the Worlds in May in Abu Dhabi?
The decision has not yet been made, even if I am selected. Hifumi Abe won’t be there, that’s for sure, he won’t go out again until the Olympics. We’ll see.

You are doing Ramadan, does it have an impact on your activity?
It has no impact. I feel good when I do Ramadan. I adapt my training. It’s a time when I recharge my batteries with my family. I know that when I come out of a well-done Ramadan, I am full of energy. It doesn’t bother me. We are lucky to have doctors, at PSG in particular (his club), who advise us very well. I wake up at night, I eat. I don’t miss anything during the day. I’m 28 years old, young it was a little harder, today we eat at 7 p.m., I’ve had worse, 10 p.m. I adapt and I’m lucky that the Federation is really open about this and trusts me. »
