French Headliners Shine in Indian Wells: No Surprises Here

No bad surprises for the French headliners in Indian Wells. On a cloud in recent weeks, titled in Dubai just seven days ago, Ugo Humbert did not perform at his best level for his entry into the running at Indian Wells. But the man with six finals won out of six possible provided the essentials to beat the local Patrick Kypson (6-4, 6-4), 151st player in the world.

Probably diminished by a little physical pain, Humbert made as many winning shots as unforced errors (23) and that pretty much sums up the content of his performance. But he came out of it after two almost identical sets: each time, the 25-year-old broke in the middle of the set (2-2 in the first, 3-3 in the second). And each time, he struggled to finish the round, even having to erase break points.

Mannarino was in a hurry

Not at his best level, the 14th player in the world will undoubtedly have to step up his game to extend his good momentum. In the next round, he will face another local on Monday, either Tommy Paul or Alex Michelsen.

Mannarino easily dominated Czech Tomas Machac in two sets (6-1, 6-2). The 35-year-old spent only 1 hour 15 minutes on court and did not give his opponent the slightest chance. In the next round he will meet either his compatriot Alexandre Müller or the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

Missing out on his American tour, Arthur Fils confirmed that he had taken this Masters 1000 the right way. After taking out Neto Borges, the 19-year-old dismissed Alejandro Davidovich in two sets (6-3, 6-4). He now awaits the winner of the match between Casper Ruud and Lukas Klein.
