Formula 1 to see major changes in 2026: New engines to deliver over 1000 hp

New rules will apply in Formula 1 in 2026. The engine rules will be completely turned upside down and the aerodynamic rules will also be significantly adjusted. According to Pat Symonds, the new engines will deliver more than 1000 hp.

The new rules will not apply for another two years, but most teams are already working hard on them. The engines have been a topic of conversation for quite some time and these rules have caught the attention of Audi, Honda and Ford. But not everyone was satisfied, because many teams fear that the cars will become heavier and that this will affect, for example, the top speed.

1000 pk

According to Formula 1 technical director Pat Symonds, this fear is unfounded. The experienced Symonds explains in the podcast ‘Beyond the Grid’ how the plans stand: “The cars will deliver 900 hp with electric power. We will have more than 1000 hp with the cars before 2026, because we want more power. via the electric motor. There is currently no turbo lag in these cars because we have an electric motor on the turbo. But turbo lag is no longer what it used to be.”

Superheroes

According to Symonds, the weight of the car and the amount of downforce are also taken into account. The plan is to reduce the downforce level of the cars, in this way the weight should also be reduced. Symonds: “One of the reasons why the cars are so heavy now is because they have to deal with a lot of load, so they slide a little bit more. There is also a little more emphasis on the drivers and that is important. The drivers are the heroes. They are the superheroes we want to promote. In that respect, things are moving in the right direction.”
