Formula 1 in Melbourne: Why the Mercedes disaster continues

Loss of trust: Not even the record world champion Hamilton trusts his car in “fast corners”. Image: AFP

The former Formula 1 series winner is not making any progress in the third year after being replaced as the industry leader. Even record world champion Lewis Hamilton doesn’t trust the racing car in “fast” corners. He is frustrated.

After two years in obscurity, Mercedes wanted to reach for the stars again in Formula 1. But after two Grands Prix, shortly before the Melbourne Grand Prix on Sunday (5:00 a.m. CET in the FAZ live ticker for Formula 1 and on Sky) reads the processing of the races like a serial novel. According to the pilots, the new Mercedes W15 is easier to drive, it has also become a bit more predictable and is no longer left behind by the others on the straights.

But the car didn’t get significantly faster over one lap. In the first two races of the season in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Mercedes improved by seven tenths of a second compared to the previous year, while Ferrari only improved by a few hundredths and Red Bull made marginally less progress. But the lead was huge. And so everything stayed the same.
