Former Boss Outsourced: Ex-Wolfsburg Director Responds to Attacks on Coach

Outsourced by the ex-boss!

Ex-Wolfsburg managing director Jörg Schmadtke (turns 60 on Saturday / most recently Liverpool) reacted to the attacks by ex-national player Max Kruse (35) against the current “Wolves” coach Niko Kovac (52).

Kruse verbally attacked Kovac in his podcast “Flatterball”. The ex-Wolfsburg striker described Kovac, among other things, as an “absolute character disaster”.

Schmadtke counters Kruse.

Schmadtke, who brought Kruse back to Wolfsburg from Union Berlin in January 2022, responded to these statements in the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung” on Friday. Schmadtke: “I have the feeling that Max Kruse has a disturbed perception. The fact that people like him talk about character leaves me helpless.”

Schmadtke further described Kruse’s statements as “bottomless impudence.”

▶︎ Review: After Kovac took office in the summer of 2022, Kruse only played on the first five match days of 2022/23 (two draws, three defeats). He was subsequently removed from the squad.

He was brought back as a “savior” six months before Kovac was signed. After Kovac’s signing was announced, he actually wanted to leave the club, but was persuaded to stay. Also because he was assured that Kovac was counting on him. But things turned out differently.

Kruse: “A week after the transfer window closed, the coach called me in and said: Max, you’re not giving the team any input, you’re not playing any more games under me. Then I think to myself: How anti-social is that?”

Back then, Kovac missed “100% identification and concentration with a focus on VfL. We didn’t have that feeling with Max.”

Now on Saturday (3:30 p.m./live on Sky and in the BILD.de live ticker) Kovac will be talking about his job at VfL. The “Wolves” have been waiting for a Bundesliga win for ten games. This calendar year, Wolfsburg is even completely without a threesome.

▶︎ According to BILD information, it will definitely be over for Kovac in the summer. The successor candidates are Ralph Hasenhüttl (56/most recently Southampton) and Matthias Jaissle (35/Al-Ahli).
