Final between USA and Mexico interrupted

The final of the CONCACAF Nations League between the national soccer teams of the USA and Mexico was interrupted several times due to homophobic chants from the fans. During the USA’s victory on Sunday (local time) in Arlington, Texas, the referee stopped the game several times in the final phase after Mexican fans started chanting.

The Continental Association for North and Central America and the Caribbean said it condemned the discriminatory chants. Stadium security personnel identified a significant number of fans involved and removed them from the arena.

Meet former Bundesliga professionals

In terms of sport, the game was decided by two former Bundesliga professionals. Former Leipzig player Tyler Adams (45th minute) and Dortmund player Giovanni Reyna (63rd minute), who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, scored the goals for the hosts.

After Reyna’s goal, the celebrating US team was hit by objects thrown onto the field by fans. “We want a great atmosphere but not having things thrown at us. “It’s dangerous, someone could get hurt,” said national coach Gregg Berhalter.

CONCACAF initially did not announce any disciplinary measures after the game was interrupted. “It is extremely disappointing that this matter continues to be an issue in some games, especially in the context that in two years there will be an enormous opportunity to further grow the sport in our region,” the association said. The United States, Mexico and Canada will host the 2026 World Cup, which will open at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City.
