Ferrari should not overestimate itself: ‘There was no Max today’

Ferrari had an excellent weekend in Australia with a one-two finish and the fastest race lap. Both drivers are now catching up with Verstappen and Ferrari is also doing good business in the constructors’ championship. “One and two was the best we could do this weekend,” said Charles Leclerc in an interview with F1TV.

Although Leclerc himself did not manage to take the win, he is quite satisfied with the final result. “I am satisfied with my performance,” he says. Yet he is not completely satisfied with the entire weekend. Qualifying did not go as well as he had hoped. “I’m not happy with the qualification,” he begins. ‘I didn’t do very well, it’s not what I had hoped for.’ The Monegasque’s tires also did not do exactly what he wanted. “The second stint was not so good, I suffered quite a bit from wear and tear,” he says. ‘My last stint was good, but by then it was too late.’

Ferrari could compete with Red Bull in the future

The Ferrari driver would of course have liked to win himself, but is still happy for his teammate. “Carlos was on top of it all weekend,” Leclerc admits. “So congratulations. I’m happy for the team, we got the maximum points and we have the fastest lap.’ The team performance is to the Monegasque’s liking, but he hopes to improve in the coming races. Today he wasn’t quite in shape, which didn’t help either. “We always try to do better,” he says. ‘If on a weekend where I’m not at my best I get second place and set the fastest lap, then that’s just fine.’

When asked whether he thinks Ferrari can put some pressure on Red Bull Racing after today’s great race, Leclerc is cautious. “There will be weekends where we can increase the pressure at Red Bull,” thinks the man from Monaco. “We shouldn’t get carried away,” he warns himself and the Italian racing team. “There was no Max today and we know how fast he is.” Nevertheless, Leclerc sees opportunities to compete with Verstappen and the team from Austria in the future. “If we continue like this, there will certainly be races where we can put pressure on him.”
