Federal Public Prosecutor seeks suspension for Vanhaezebrouck: T1 warns journalists

Last week’s statements have not yet been digested. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office requests a match-effective suspension and one conditional suspension for Hein Vanhaezebrouck, after his criticism of referee De Cremer. “I don’t know what the federal attorney’s ambition is,” the T1 responds. “I would say: journalists, be careful when you write something about him.”

Let’s rewind to Saturday, March 2.

In Liège, Hein Vanhaezebrouck gives vent to his frustrations after a first half with some remarkable decisions by the match management.

The possible offense against Archie Brown is particularly troubling to the trainer. KAA Gent did not receive a penalty for it, but not much later it was a prize for Standard on the other side.

“For me it was a sign that he was not ready for this kind of match,” T1 said afterwards about ref Wesli De Cremer.

A ruling that was enough for the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, which demanded a matchday suspension for Vanhaezebrouck.

“The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has established that Mr Vanhaezebrouck – not for the first time – has misjudged these limits,” it said in a statement.

“The own players, the board of KAA Gent, the city of Ghent, the referee, the VAR, … Mr. Vanhaezebrouck has not missed an opportunity to insult in recent weeks, and at no time has a critical comment been made about the own appearance in the media.”

Vanhaezebrouck’s response

A message that made the man in question laugh at the press conference after the match at Union.

“These are peripheral facts,” Hein Vanhaezebrouck remains blunt at first. To then give full push back.

“They have accused me of commenting on the refs, the VAR, on the city council, on my players, on my board, on my neighbor, the pastor, my wife and children …”

“I wonder what the federal prosecutor’s ambition is. Whether he absolutely wants to become general attorney general. When it comes to football, only talk about football. If you know nothing about the situation, what is he doing? “

You should actually ask a lawyer to make sure he isn’t causing me any harm by saying all those things.

“You should actually check with a lawyer to make sure he isn’t doing me any harm by saying all those things,” he explains with a wink in the press room.

“Ultimately he has to do his job. But what does he say? Brown dropped for no reason. Then I said he didn’t do his job. And that will be the reason why he will want to get back at me.”

Vanhaezebrouck therefore sees his statements as part of free speech. He concludes his speech with wise advice to journalists.

“Be careful if you write something tomorrow about the Federal Attorney or the Referee Department…”
