Falling Out: The Feud Between Max Kruse and Niko Kovac

These two won’t be friends anymore!

A week ago, ex-professional Max Kruse (36) fought against Niko Kovac (52). He described the character of his former head coach as an “absolute catastrophe” and his treatment as “anti-social”. The Croatian was fired at VfL Wolfsburg last Sunday and replaced by Ralph Hasenhüttl (56).

At his last press conference, Kovac commented on Kruse’s statements: “That’s not possible. This is not beneficial for our society, not beneficial for young people.” Wolfsburg’s ex-boss Jörg Schmadtke (60) had also previously criticized Kruse: “I have the feeling that Max Kruse has a disturbed perception. The fact that people like him talk about character leaves me helpless.”

Kruse does not want to leave these statements uncommented. “Everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Jörg Schmadtke comes out of obscurity and also has to comment on it. Niko Kovac also said something about me during his farewell PK. The sting just runs deep with them,” says Kruse in his podcast “Flatterball”.

A new verbal attack follows: “Kovac said back then that my Bundesliga career was over. We don’t need to talk about character and human traits when you put out sayings like that. And then to stand in front of the press and say that the media has to stop it. This is not a good role model for young people. You should always look after your own nose.”

Kruse follows up against Kovac

There are also conciliatory tones in the current podcast episode. Kruse recently revealed that there was a group at VfL at the time that had gossiped about Kovac. When listing the members, Kruse also mentioned Yannick Gerhardt (30), who is still a player at VfL. This was not well received by Wolfsburg or the surrounding area and certainly not by Gerhardt himself.

Kruse also noticed his faux pas. “I made a voice note to Yannick on WhatsApp and told him that it wasn’t my intention to get him into trouble or make him look bad,” says the shisha smoker.

“Anyone who knows me knows I would never do that on purpose. It was completely unintentional and not related to him, as he was the only one of us who still played under Niko Kovac. I apologized to him and said: I hope this doesn’t cause him any problems. But he didn’t answer me…” Why?

Kruse gives the answer himself: “I don’t know how to understand that. He probably wasn’t entirely happy about it. But again: Yannick, I’m sorry and I didn’t mean it that way. Your name shouldn’t even be mentioned there. I’m sorry for Yannick. An apology goes out to him. Not to the others!”
