Exploring Romantic Relationships Through Bastien Vivès’ “La Boucherie”

Here is a small schematic interlude of romantic relational behavior imagined and drawn by Bastien Vivès.

Very rare complete sequence. A unique opportunity!

Published in 2008 by Vraoum, “La Boucherie” is one of Bastien Vivès’ gems. This album depicts married life and romantic relationships, with its moments of doubt and especially sadness. This album is a succession of scenes which will appear disjointed to some and full of meaning to others. You will have understood, I am one of the others, those who see in this book a touching album, an album carrying a fine and precise analysis on the relationships between a man and a woman and especially on their respective misunderstandings, each living in his own way. its own story.

To appreciate this album at its true value, you have to sit back in your chair, take your time, open your chakras and above all be ready to question your own story. For those who don’t like self-criticism or at least questioning themselves, move on, this album is not for you! Although! Take off your blinders! If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for your life partner!

Bastien Vivès first published this interlude on his blog in a version slightly different from the one published in the album (see additional photos). The main difference remains above all in the arrangement of the drawings… in banner format for the blog and in page format for the album. I have decided to present this sequence to you in its blog-style format in the main image, as can also be seen on the bedetheque https://www.bedetheque.com/serie-20281-BD-Boucherie-Vives .html
It should be noted that Bastien Vivès worked on this sequence on three pages, two pages of four drawings each and one page for the texts, before reassembling it digitally. The pages are A4 format and thick weight. The four drawings on each of the two pages are on an area of approximately 17 cm by 17 cm. The texts are also present in pencil on the boards, making all the appeal of this sequence and which is rare for this album because the boards are usually empty of text for this album, the editing having been done digitally.

Behind a first down-to-earth reading hides a metaphorical reading for those who question themselves. A little decryption of the three sequences using the little characters in this incredible album:

The bat sequence:
The punchline: she gets beaten up and for free too!
Well seated in your chair: at times and without warning, you don’t know why, but something can fall on the corner of your head hum hum and not just a little. Romantic relationships are a bit like a boxing match, you can take some really big uppercuts… and you can end up on the ground!

The knife sequence:
First reading: she leaves him and very suddenly!
Second reading: without realizing it, we sometimes say or do things that have an impact that can sometimes have no return. It’s a bit like giving the stick (here the knife) to be beaten (shot down!).

The restaurant sequence:
First approach: at first glance, we imagine a romantic tête-à-tête.
After reading an aperitif in hand: she leaves it and rather curtly. The dialogues are tasty and Bastien Vivès gives us a very colorful and particularly spicy pre-menu, even indigestible for one of the two parts. Following !

These three sequences with the little characters are for me the very essence of this album and the genius of their author. At the age of 24, Bastien Vivès takes a lively and sharp look at romantic relationships.
