Exciting Bundesliga Action on Saturday Afternoon: Bayern Turns the Game, Mainz Wins, and Fan Anger at Mönchengladbach

There’s a lot going on on Saturday afternoon of the 26th matchday!

Bayern turn the game in Darmstadt, Mainz win in the basement duel on the club’s anniversary and there is thick air at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

You can read all the information about the five games in the Bundesliga conference here:

Heidenheim – Mönchengladbach 1:1

Fan anger at Gladbach!

The cup embarrassment in Saarbrücken still has an impact in Heidenheim (1:1). Because in a letter from the active Gladbach fan scene it says: “For years we have been standing in front of a shambles in this phase of the season. It is becoming increasingly difficult as a fan to continue to support the club.”

In Heidenheim the team is even punished by their own fans!

When the Gladbach professionals run to the away block clapping before the game, there is a concert of whistling.

Even after kick-off, the majority of the 2,000 fans who traveled with them boycotted their support, and even when Hack took the early 1-0 lead (9th), the Ultras refused to celebrate the goal. It wasn’t until after 22 minutes that Gladbach chants started in the block, and pyrotechnics were ignited shortly before half-time.

Despite the early lead, the Fohlen fans still have to wait for their second away win of the season. After a fine combination, Dinkci welds the ball into the corner for Heidenheim’s equalizer (66th).

Those in charge want to keep Gladbach coach Seoane beyond the season despite his poor performance.

Union Berlin – Werder Bremen 2:1

Lots of fighting and cramping!

The duel between Union Berlin and Werder Bremen (2:1) is difficult for the fans in the first half. Goal opportunities have been in short supply for a long time. There are plenty of yellow cards coming your way!

The Union players Vogt, Gosens and Tousart see three yellows within four minutes. In the first half, six players were warned by referee Schlager.

After the break, the game picked up speed and there were finally goals: Union’s winter newcomer Vertessen (51st) and Aaronson (52nd) gave Union a 2-0 lead with a double strike within just 98 seconds.

Werder’s Weiser can only shorten the score after a Ducksch corner (63′).

Mainz – Bochum 2-0

Mainz gives itself a gift!

For the club’s 119th anniversary, the 05ers celebrated a very important threesome in the basement duel against Bochum (2-0)!

Bochum’s Bernardo fouls Lee in the penalty area. Burkardt safely converted the penalty to give Mainz the lead (45th + 3).

Curious: After four missed penalties (Ajorque/2, Barkok, Amiri), this is the first penalty goal of the current season!

The sold-out Mainz stadium shows how important the game is. Because last season there were 10,000 fewer spectators against Bochum.

Kohr sees yellow after just 40 seconds! This makes him the first player with ten warnings in the current Bundesliga season and will be missing in Leipzig next week.

In the second half, Burkardt scored his brace (71st) and is now Mainz’s top scorer with four measly goals this season.

With the three points, Mainz overtakes Cologne and jumps into the relegation place. Bochum, on the other hand, has suffered its fourth bankruptcy in a row.

Wolfsburg – Augsburg 1:3

Now things are getting really tight for him!

Wolfsburg cannot win against Augsburg either (1:3). This means that VfL coach Niko Kovac is likely to be on the verge of elimination.

Because the Wolves have only had one Bundesliga win since November 2023 (1-0 against Darmstadt on matchday 15) and are waiting for a three-pointer for the first time in the club’s history!

Things get off to a good start: in his starting eleven comeback, Wimmer scores well from the turn with the help of the inside post – 1-0 for the Wolves (9th)!

In the first leg, Wimmer was kicked off the pitch by Augsburg’s Pedersen and had to go out injured. That’s why he should particularly enjoy his first Bundesliga appearance since April 2023.

Bitter: Shortly before the break, it’s time for Wimmer to finish work. Referee Gerach shows Ösi red after a foul on Mbabu just outside the penalty area – a very tough decision! Wolfsburg’s Arnold deflected the subsequent free kick from Maier into the wall – 1:1 (45th + 2).

After the break, double packer Jakic (61st/79th) ensures Augsburg’s fourth win in a row – a club record. Possible candidates to succeed Kovac are Ralph Hasenhüttl and Matthias Jaissle.

Darmstadt – Bayern 2:5

Bayern are once again in a scoring mood and turn the game around in Darmstadt after falling behind early on. Read the match report here.
