Euro 2024: Ukraine overcomes Iceland (2-1) and qualifies

It is a beautiful symbol and it will be a great breath of fresh air for a Ukrainian people who have been going through hell for more than two years. This Tuesday evening, the “Blues and Yellows” snatched their ticket at the last minute for the final phase of Euro 2024 and will therefore see Germany this summer (June 14-July 14).

Deliverance was slow in coming for the Ukrainians, who largely dominated the proceedings in the second half after having suffered the blows in the first. At the break, the Icelanders were one goal ahead, thanks to Albert Gudmundsson’s opener (0-1, 30th), to which Roman Yaremchuk thought he had responded, a goal ultimately denied to the Ukrainians for a position offside (39th).

Thanks in particular to a decisive Lunin (14th, 77th), in as good shape as with Real Madrid, the Ukrainians were then able to come back and take the advantage in the second half. Viktor Tsygankov scored the equalizing goal (1-1, 54th) after returning from the locker room before Ukraine exploded with joy thanks to Chelsea player Mikhailo Mudryk (2-1, 84th), after missed opportunities by Yaremchuk (65th), Sudakov (70th) or Mykolenko (74th).

Ukraine therefore joins Group E of the Euro, that of Belgium, Slovakia and Romania. She will first play against Romania (June 17, 3 p.m.), then Slovakia (June 21, 3 p.m.) and finally Belgium (June 26, 6 p.m.). This will be her third participation in the Euro after 2012, 2016 and 2020, the last edition during which she achieved her best performance with a quarter-final, lost to England (0-4).
