End of Cooperation: SKN St. Pölten and VfL Wolfsburg to Part Ways

As announced at the beginning of March, the cooperation between second division team SKN St. Pölten and German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg will end at the end of the season. The Lower Austrians announced this on Thursday.

VfL’s exit has now been confirmed in writing, it was said, and the search for a new partner is underway.

“We are working hard to find a new partner who will enable us to be economically stable and competitive in sports in the future. We are currently in the exploratory phase,” said the SKN, who had accepted it from Wolfsburg could never meet the sporting expectations set.

They are currently 16 points behind first place, which entitles them to promotion, to fifth place.

Four-year contract was terminated after two years

On May 10, 2021, St. Pölten informed about the cooperation and spoke of a contract that will initially run for four years. Now they part ways a year before the end of this time. At the time the contract was signed, the Lower Austrians were still part of the Bundesliga and were hoping for a sporting leap forward through a “win-win situation”.

As the bottom team, a few weeks later at the end of May they also had an “extra chance” to stay in the league in the relegation game against Austria Klagenfurt, but they lost out to the Carinthians.

This is probably one of the reasons why the collaboration was not a good one from the start. Eighth place in 2022 and third place in 2023, where they were still leading the table after 26 laps before the sporting collapse, were the meager results in the fight for promotion.

This season we are much further away from that. There are currently no loan players from Wolfsburg in the squad. One of the people who played at St. Pölten the longest was the American Ulysses Llanez, who had eleven goals and seven assists in two seasons between 2021 and 2023.
