Empowering Youth Through Environmental Education: The Garden of the Hesperides’ Ongoing Initiatives

He Garden of the Hesperides continues to develop educational proposals aimed at raising awareness of the care of our environment linked to other areas, such as health, climate change, energy saving, circular economy, land, marine and air pollution among the youngest.

And during three sessions the “Healthy Planet, Healthy People” workshops belonging to the program Roots and Shoots of the Jane Goodall Institute at the CEIP José Ortega y Gasset, within the framework of environmental activities that the Garden of the Hespérides carries out.

Lucía Juliá, Raíces y Brotes monitor, has introduced the figure of Jane Goodall, to later discuss each topic. The benefits of sport for our daily lives have been shown, counting on the Olympic badminton medalist- Carolina Marín. The third-year students of Ortega y Gasset listened to the words that the well-known athlete dedicated to them.

On the other hand, the concept of nature deficit was also discussed as one of the problems that society faces every day, since There are fewer and fewer green spaces those we have in the cities and Ceuta is no exception. A city in which urban trees are the subject of actions that are increasingly less valued by citizens and environmental organizations.

Likewise, the topic of the Marine contamination, an issue with which our city is familiar, since on our coasts there is a lot of waste that is collected. Land pollution and pollution related to air quality They also had their moment in these workshops, without forgetting that air quality has been the subject of measurement and assessment by an external company thanks to the Garden of the Hespérides, yielding very little encouraging data for Ceuta society.

Thus, we hope that these environmental actions will become more and more frequent within the educational panorama of Ceuta to improve not only knowledge of the environment, but also to implicate and involve civil society that has so much to say about it.

We cannot miss the opportunity to remember that current educational legislation contemplates ecosocial competence.

From the Jardín de las Hespérides Environmental Education Project, its coordinator and teacher Juan Carlos Navarro, appreciates the collaboration that the Jane Goodall Institute provides to the educational community and encourages all educational centers in the city to participate in these workshops.
