Easter Musical Review: Camerata del Titano Performs Haydn’s The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross

Second appointment with the Easter Musical Review curated by the Camerata del Titano Association of San Marino.

The event will take place Wednesday 27 March at 9pm at the Church of San Francesco – San Marino City (free entry).

On stage there will be the Orchestra Camerata del Titano of San Marino directed by Maestro Augusto Ciavatta who will perform The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross (1787), by Franz Joseph Haydn (version for strings), one of the best-known instrumental compositions of the period pasqaule.

As the organizers explain, the last seven words of Christ on the Cross are the program of a composition organized in seven sonatas, with an introduction and a finale. The serious and solemn rhythm that characterizes all parts of the composition (except the finale – Earthquake), describes the long ordeal of the passing, the dramatic moment narrated in the Gospels. Haydn at the end of the 1780s, is one of the best-known composers at a European level and accepts the commission from the Cardinal of Cadiz (Spain) for “stage music” as a commentary on the rites of Good Friday, an idea of music far from the flickering formal “Adagio – Allegro” alternation of his time. So seven compositions with a slow and solemn rhythm, without the aid of the sung text, in which Haydn uses “only” the tools of musical language such as melodies, silences, modulations, accents, colors. The result is mysterious, profound, intense instrumental pages, where “Each sonata, or each text, is expressed solely by the means of instrumental music in such a way that it will necessarily make the deepest impression on the soul of the most distracted listener.” (FJ Haydn).

“A concert-ritual – conclude the organizers – scheduled for Wednesday 27 March, in which the songs will be interspersed with the declamation of the “Words” as the inspiring motto of the music. The readings are entrusted to the Nuns of Perpetual Adoration of San Marino who host the event in the Church of San Francesco in San Marino”.
