The Indoor World Championships in Glasgow will go down as the most successful Indoor World Championships ever for the Netherlands. The Dutch athletes won a total of five medals last weekend (two gold, one silver and two bronze).

The previous record was four medals, at the previous World Indoor Championships in 2022 in Belgrade. But there was no gold medal for the Netherlands in the Serbian capital. Bol took silver in the 400 meters at the time and also did the same with the Dutch women in the 4×400 meters.

In Glasgow there was two gold medals for Bol. Lieke Klaver won silver in the 400 meters indoors and there was bronze for the men in the 4×400 meters and for Sofie Dokter in the pentathlon.

The World Indoor Championships have been held since 1985. The first Dutchman to win a medal was Elly van Hulst that year in the 1,500 meters (gold). Van Hulst won gold again four years later, this time in the 3,000 meters. Nelli Cooman (in 1987 and 1989 in the 60 meters) and now Bol also became world champions twice.

Successful World Cup fits in with the development of recent years

The successful World Indoor Championships fits in with the developments of recent years in Dutch athletics. The World Cup in Budapest last summer was also the most successful outdoor World Cup ever for the Netherlands. The Dutch team won five medals in the Hungarian capital (two gold, one silver and two bronze).

The good performance gives hope for the Games next summer in Paris. Sifan Hassan will also be there, which means that the Netherlands, in addition to Bol, has another favorite for one or more gold medals. Hassan did not participate in Glasgow.

The most successful Games ever for Dutch athletics were those held three years ago in Tokyo. The Dutch athletics team won a total of eight medals (two gold, three silver and three bronze).
