The heat and high humidity are bothering the tennis players at the tournament in Miami already in the qualification. In a truly French three-set battle, Arthur Cazaux collapsed and left the court in a wheelchair. His compatriot Harold Mayot surprised with a lax reaction when, instead of helping his opponent, he went to the corner of the court for a towel.
In the first round of qualifying for the “thousands” tournament in Miami, the lot played with them. The match between Cazaux and Mayotte was not only a fight between two compatriots, but also between two peers.
Both were born in 2002 and played against each other in the junior Grand Slam final at the Australian Open four years ago, where Mayot took the title.
Sometimes they even play doubles together. The situation that took place on the court on Monday was all the more surprising.
During the third set of a close battle played out by the two tennis players as temperatures soared past thirty degrees Celsius, Cazaux fell to the ground.
He fell on his back just as Mayot was about to serve. Then, when he saw his opponent lying on the ground, he stopped dribbling the ball, turned his back and went to the corner of the court to get a towel.
This surprised the French media, who were wondering why he did not run to the aid of his exhausted opponent.
“I didn’t see him fall and I thought he was just lying down because he had a spasm. When I understood it was serious, I immediately went to him and tried to help,” French sports daily L’Équipe quoted him as saying afterwards.
After about a ten-minute break, when the doctors managed to revive Cazaux enough to at least sit in a wheelchair, the match ended with a scream.
Mayotte will thus play for the main competition in Miami against David Goffin from Belgium.
Two Czechs also advanced in the qualification. Jakub Menšík will have a final duel with Slovakian Lukáš Klein, and Vít Kopřiva will compete against American John Jeffrey Wolf.
