Dominant Dodgers Defeat Cardinals in Ohtani’s Debut at Dodger Stadium

Freddie Freeman hit a home run and drove in three runs and Mookie Betts hit a home run and scored three times as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals this Thursday, in Japanese Shohei Ohtani’s debut at Dodger Stadium.

Ohtani, who was the Dodgers’ main signing in the free agent market and who has had to deal with the sports betting scandal that has surrounded him, was seen relaxing and being applauded in his plate appearances, to conclude this first game in Los Angeles with two hits in three at-bats and a run scored.

The Dodgers also had a great pitching performance from right-hander Tyler Glasnow (1-0), who pitched six innings of just two hits and one run, while striking out five batters to earn his first victory of the season.

The Dodgers’ MVP trident began to show results from the very first inning, when, after a walk to Betts, Ohtani hit a double to right field, being caught between second and third base and Freeman followed him with a single to the right field to bring Betts home with the first run of the game.

Freeman scored the second of that first inning on Max Muncy’s sacrifice fly.

Los Angeles’ powerful attack was again present in the third inning, when Betts hit a drive that went over the left field wall with no runners on the bases against Miles Mikolas.

After Betts’ home run, Ohtani received a walk and, with him on first, Freeman deposited the ball in the right field stands, to add two more runs for the Los Angeles team.

The Cardinals’ response came in the fourth inning, when Paul Goldschmidt, who was the only one to hit in the game, hit a solo home run to produce the only run for the St. Louis team.

Goldschmidt’s home run stopped a string of eight consecutive retired batters by Clasnow. In the bottom of the sixth inning James Outman drove in the Dodgers’ sixth run, firing a hit to right field that allowed Dominican Teoscar Hernández to score from second base. The Dodgers hit the record again in the seventh inning due to Muncy’s hit to the right field, to drive Betts from third base.

Mikolas (0-1) had no secrets about the Dodgers’ bats and left the mound after 4.1 innings in which they scored five runs, taking the loss for the Cardinals.

For the Dodgers, Dominican Hernández scored a run, while Venezuelan Miguel Rojas and Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández failed in an at-bat. For the Cardinals, Venezuelan Willson Contreras failed in three plate appearances.
