Until Thursday afternoon, people thought Adidas and the DFB simply belonged together. In the shirts with the three stripes (which sometimes had no stripes at all), the German footballers won world and European championships, but also embarrassed themselves. Our sports editorial team put their heads together and compiled a ranking of the most beautiful jerseys and the most hideous ones.

The winner is of course a world champion jersey. Lothar plowed through the midfield and Andi Brehme jumped through the Roman air after his penalty, cheering uninhibitedly. Visually the jersey was pretty bright. German national players had never worn their national colors as confidently as they did in the year of reunification. Nevertheless, from today’s perspective, the shirt doesn’t seem too Germanic, but almost hip again, the retro sports jacket that has become a jersey. Sure, Rudi Völler’s hairstyle is back too.
