Oliver Bierhoff cannot share the excitement about the national team’s pink away jersey at the 2024 European Championship. The bright jersey should sell well, says the former DFB director – and is reminiscent of the successful year 2014

For Oliver Bierhoff, the provocative choice of color for the national soccer team’s pink European Championship jersey is solely based on economic arguments. The focus is on “a commercial idea”, namely “selling the jerseys,” said the former DFB managing director on Welt TV.

He himself had already seen the designs for the colorful jersey for the home European Championships in the planning stage. Supplier Adidas wanted to “hit the nerve of the kids” with the jersey. It’s hard for me to imagine that a “60-year-old would like to wear the jersey,” said Bierhoff. The 55-year-old assured that he himself thought the jersey was brave and good.

The DFB and its supplier presented the two jerseys for the home European Championship this summer on Thursday. The home version is classic white, while the away version is bright pink and purple for the first time.

Bierhoff defended this strategy and recalled the second jersey at the 2014 World Cup, which with its red and black horizontal stripes was reminiscent of the top club Flamengo in the host country Brazil – a marketing idea he was also responsible for back then.

The pink jersey caused some strong reactions on social media after its presentation. The DFB and Adidas were apparently prepared for this and presented a video clip on Sunday in which the critical tones as well as the traditional view of the German jersey were commented on ironically and humorously.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann, who also likes the new jersey, is gathering his squad for the European Championship test games on Saturday in France and three days later against the Netherlands on Monday in Frankfurt. Both jersey variants should celebrate their premiere in these games.
