One game was enough to rekindle the enthusiasm for the DFB team. German fans promptly petitioned for a new song to be played when celebrating a goal.

Within one day, the online petition “‘Major Tom’, the new goal anthem of the German national team” has found over 48,500 supporters (as of March 25, 6:25 p.m.), and the number is rising. It was put on on Sunday after the German national team’s impressive 2-0 win against France in Lyon. The fact that the petition has grown so quickly has a lot to do with this sporting liberation. National coach Julian Nagelsmann’s national team played by far their best game in years. Many fans seem to be slowly getting into the mood for the European Championship, which starts in just under three months.

The song “Major Tom” by Peter Schilling is used by “Adidas” in several advertising clips for the new, pink away jersey – and both were apparently well received. As a result, many users accompanied past hits by the DFB selection with the hit from 1982. In the chorus of the song, “the spaceship floats completely weightless” and “completely detached from the earth”.

The techno hit “Kernkraft 400” has been running at DFB-Elf so far

The techno hit “Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation is currently being played at DFB goals; the fans decided on this in a vote by the German Football Association in mid-2019. At the upcoming home game this Tuesday (8:45 p.m./RTL) in Frankfurt against the Netherlands, Zombie Nation’s hard beat would be played in the event of a goal, as the DFB announced to the “t-online.de” portal.

If the popularity of the petition remains so high, that is likely to change quickly. “Major Tom” could be used before the home European Championship in the test games on June 3rd in Nuremberg against Ukraine and on June 7th in Mönchengladbach against Greece.
