1. FC Saarbrücken is sensationally in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. After a passionate fight, the third division club kicked out Gladbach, the third Bundesliga club after Bayern and Frankfurt. And the chances of reaching the final in Berlin are not bad.
Once again they struck with the final action of the game. In the third minute of added time, 1. FC Saarbrücken launched a counterattack in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. It was the first real attack in the second half and the decisive one: Kai Brünker scored against Borussia Mönchengladbach to make it 2-1 and sensationally shot the third division club into the semi-finals. As in the sensational victory over FC Bayern in the second round, Saarbrücken decided the game in stoppage time. The third division club scored against Munich in the 96th minute. On the pitch, which was softened by constant rain and difficult to play on, Saarbrücken put up a passionate fight and made the game difficult for Borussia. Gladbach had the advantage of the field, but had no real chance to score in the second half.

Captain Julian Weigl didn’t even try to sugarcoat the defeat. “It’s difficult to find words for it. The pitch became increasingly difficult to play on. Saarbrücken was waiting for this one chance. This can’t happen to us, being countered in the 93rd minute. You have to progress with a third division team. We failed today,” said Weigl.
Only one Bundesliga club, Leverkusen, is in the semi-finals
After Borussia’s exit, only one Bundesliga club is in the cup: Bayer Leverkusen, who will face Fortuna Düsseldorf in the semi-finals. Xabi Alonso’s team are of course the big favorites for the title. But Saarbrücken, which knocked KSC, Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Bayern out of the cup, is obviously good for many sensations.
