Gladbach flies out of the DFB Cup in Saarbrücken. After the defeat in the quarter-finals, the tone at Borussia became harsher, sports director Roland Virkus publicly criticized the team and coach. The chances of winning the first title in 29 years and qualifying for the European Cup have never been greater.

The players had to report and followed the call of the supporters who had traveled with them. In the pouring rain, the professionals from Borussia Mönchengladbach stood in front of the fan curve after the 1:2 at 1. FC Saarbrücken, which had sealed their exit in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup, and had to listen to a lot from the fans. The disappointment after the cup exit at the third division club was huge.

The team missed a great opportunity to add a lot of sparkle to a mixed season. Gladbach was just two wins away from the DFB Cup final and their first chance to win the title since 1995. But once again the team disappointed at the crucial moment. The defeat at the third division club was deserved as Gladbach failed to convert their field superiority into chances and goals.

If Borussia had won, they would have had a home game in the semifinals against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, who are fighting against relegation in the second division. In a possible final it would probably have been against Bayer Leverkusen, which would have meant qualification for the European Cup even if they had lost, as Leverkusen will start in the Champions League next season.

“We failed today”

“I come from Gladbach myself and know what it means for the fans and the club, which is why the elimination disappoints me even more. I feel sorry for every fan who came here for the second time expecting us to reach the semi-finals. They are understandably disappointed,” said Virkus, who then directly called out his coach Gerardo Seoane: “The fact that we can’t think of anything against such an opponent in the entire second half and then run so blindly into a counterattack, that shouldn’t happen, and that also has nothing to do with a lawn that is difficult to play on. And I now expect answers to that, from the team and also from the coaching staff.”

Captain Julian Weigl didn’t even try to sugarcoat the bitter defeat. “It’s difficult to find words for it. The pitch became increasingly difficult to play on. Saarbrücken was waiting for this one chance. This can’t happen to us, being countered in the 93rd minute. You have to progress with a third division team. We failed today,” said Weigl.
