Despite injury, Manuel Neuer remains number one under Julian Nagelsmann

Manuel Neuer remains number one in Germany’s goal for the home European Championships in the summer; the muscle injury he recently suffered has no impact on this plan. National coach Julian Nagelsmann made this clear on Friday.

“We made the decision like that, nothing will change now,” said the 36-year-old in the run-up to the test against France on Saturday (9 p.m./ZDF).

“He hasn’t been out for eight months now, it would be strange if I revised my decision every time I got injured,” said Nagelsmann: “It’s also about giving the player a certain level of security. This applies to players who come off the bench come just like the ones I count among the top 13.”

Neuer tore a muscle fiber in his left adductor during training on Wednesday and then left the national team camp. The FC Bayern goalkeeper was actually supposed to make his DFB comeback after 15 months in Lyon and three days later in Frankfurt against the Netherlands, but instead Marc-Andre ter Stegen will now start in both duels.

The FC Barcelona goalkeeper also enjoys full trust, Nagelsmann emphasized: “I told Marc that I’m glad to God that we have a second world-class goalkeeper who plays these two games and to whom I conveyed that he would always be in this position what can happen, as you can see now.”
