Oihan Sancet is, at 23 years old, one of the most recognizable ‘soldiers of Luis De la Fuente’. He made his debut with it in the Mediterranean Games in 2018 and from there he went up with the Haro coach to the U-19, U-21 and now to the senior team, in which he debuted by scoring. He is part of the Athletic ‘group’ that has been assembled in the national team, four with Vivian, and one of the most promising players on the team.
-The national team is full of young players established in their clubs who are naturally experiencing their jump to the senior team. How do you live this process?
-Young people have been hitting very hard. They are showing that they offer a high level both at club and national level. And not only in Spain. It is well deserved that there are so many young people in the team and it shows in the atmosphere and in the relationship of the group.
-At 23 years old you are insultingly young, but Lamine Yamal16 years old, and Pau Cubarsi, At 17, they are kids who have skipped many stages thanks to their talent. How have you seen them on this day that you have been living together here?
-The truth is that they are very, very young, but they don’t look like they are 16 or 17 years old because they show that they have incredible maturity, both on and off the field. We are seeing the level they are giving at Barça and they are also giving it here. They are at an incredible level and it doesn’t seem like they are such young kids because they show incredible maturity and it is a pleasure to play with them.
-With Vivian there are now four Athletic players in a senior squad. Is it an incentive to meet teammates from the club here?
-It actually reflects the good season we are having at Athletic. There are now four of us with the arrival of Vivian, and for the first contact as a player it is easier to enter the national team when you have teammates who are already here.
-You know Luis De la Fuente perfectly because he was the one who made your debut in the Mediterranean Games and he has counted on you in all the teams he has coached. Do you see an evolution in him as a coach in these years?
-Luis is a great coach and has shown it in all the lower categories. He has won many Europeans and has risen from less to more until reaching the absolute. This shows what a good coach he is and how much trust the players have in him.
-How do you manage to integrate yourself into a dynamic in which there are times when you have to develop different roles from those of your clubs?
-He asks us to do the same as in the club, to work as we know how, as we do in the teams. And he asks us not to think too hard. Then it is true that as players who play in different clubs, we have to adapt more quickly to the game that is asked of us, but we are very identified with his style and very happy to be here.
-Personally, you have grown a lot as a player during your career in the youth teams. What is the key to this personal evolution?
-I think I have more and more confidence. At first he is more self-conscious and with the passage of time I have been feeling better, from the lower categories to the senior level. Now I just hope to give a higher level in each call I come to.

-De la Fuente told us in an interview in THE NEWSPAPER OF SPAIN that asks you for more prominence, to appear more, do you think you are achieving it?
-Little by little I am adapting more to what he asks of me and I am trying to take on that weight in the game that is so important for a playmaker, with arriving at the area, scoring goals and helping in the creation of the team’s play.
-Finally, what expectations does this young team have for the Euro Cup from Germany?
-We know that it is going to be a very complicated Euro Cup because there are very strong teams. But I think we have a chance to win it. Our goal is to win it, without a doubt, and that means solving the matches we face to go as far as possible.
