The WTA 1000 in Miami ends on a very happy note for American tennis. Danielle Collins manages to take home the first tournament of this rank of his career. The Kazakh team was beaten in the final Elena Rybakina, number 4 seeded, 7-5 6-3. For the winner, a very notable leap in the WTA rankings: she goes up 31 places and she will be number 22 from Monday (but she is not the best ranked: she was seventh).
The fact that the two are not particularly different in style of play generates a situation in which games are fought, but the variability leaves a lot to be desired. After a break point for Collins in the second game, the real fight turns on in the seventh, in which the USA has a really tough time, but manages to save four break chances for Rybakina. It happens again, on one occasion, at 5-5, but in the next game it is the Kazakh’s serve that gives in: she saves herself from 15-40, but not when it comes to the benefits.
Under the eyes of Andre Agassi, sitting in the stands watching the match, Collins tries to escape by finding the 2-0 break in the second set, but the reaction of the former Wimbledon champion is immediate. From 3-3 onwards the games, and the exchanges, begin to become more and more intense: no one gives up for a moment, Rybakina finds two balls from 3-4 without converting them, the American instead manages to snatch the serve again. The last game is an intense one: the Kazakh doesn’t want to make it so, she has two opportunities to come back, she misses, but on the other side Collins is unable to close. She makes it on the fourth occasion, with a running backhand from the left at the end of which she lies on the ground in disbelief at what she managed to do.
Of great importance for Collins is the performance on the first serve, with which he took home 74.6% of the points against Rybakina’s 69.7%. The margin of points won was very narrow, if compared to how the match went: 82-75.
