Bail paid, temporarily released: Brazilian soccer star Dani Alves, who was convicted of rape, has only left prison. The deposit of one million euros has been received by the Barcelona court, the court announced this on Monday (March 25, 2024).

After a good 14 months, football professional Dani Alves, who was convicted of sexual aggression in Spain, is free again for the first time. The Brazilian left the Brians 2 institution northwest of Barcelona on Monday afternoon. He had previously paid the deposit of one million euros that the judiciary had set for a provisional release from prison. Accompanied by his lawyer, with a brisk step, a serious expression and without making any statements, the 40-year-old got into a car around 4:30 p.m. and drove away to an unknown destination, as was seen live on the state television station RTVE.

Alves remains at large pending a decision on his appeal. Last Tuesday, Alves’ lawyer requested his client’s release, and the request was granted a day later. In addition to paying bail, Alves must surrender his Brazilian and Spanish passports and appear in court weekly.

Following the court’s release decision, the alleged rape victim’s lawyer spoke disappointedly of “justice for the rich”.

Guilty verdict for rape

Alves, who won titles in a row with FC Barcelona and Paris St. Germain, among others, has been in custody since January 2023. The former world-class legal defender was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in February. The 40-year-old was found guilty by a Spanish court of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022.
