The cycling semi-classic Across Flanders ends in disaster for superstar Wout van Aert. The nine-time stage winner in the Tour de France falls badly and is hospitalized with injuries. Three other drivers are involved in the accident.
Cycling superstar Wout van Aert was injured in a mass fall in front of the upcoming Tour of Flanders (March 31) and Paris-Roubaix (April 7) monuments. The 29-year-old lost control of his bike at high speed and a total of around a dozen riders fell. Van Aert’s yellow Visma jersey was almost completely torn, with abrasions appearing on his back. The Belgian screamed in pain as he was put on a stretcher and taken into an ambulance.
Wout van Aert was considered a contender for victory in the Tour of Flanders
The accident occurred in the cycling semi-classic Across Flanders about 68 kilometers from the finish in Waregem. Van Aert had to give up the race. The nine-time Tour de France stage winner may be at risk of failing in the upcoming one-day classics. He was one of the favorites for the Tour of Flanders, which brings up to 750,000 fans to Belgium’s biggest sporting event.
Other injured riders were the Eritrean Biniam Girmay and the Belgian Jasper Stuyven from Lidl-Trek, whose teammate Mads Pedersen from Denmark also fell.
Bitter start to the season for Wout van Aert
Van Aert, teammate of two-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard, is experiencing a bitter start to the season. On March 22nd he also crashed at the E3 Prize and later had to admit defeat to his long-term rival Mathieu van der Poel. (dpa/sid/hau)
