Cuban Archer Hugo Franco Shines at South American Championship in Brazil

Havana.- HUGO Franco finished today as the best-placed Cuban in the double round at 70 meters of the South American Archery Championship of Maricá 2024, in Brazil, which is attended by a male team from the Island as a guest.

The man from Pinar del Río, captain of the national team under the orders of Reiter Téllez, completed 664 points after the 72 arrows shot with the recurve bow, valid for sixth place among the 27 participants.

«Hugo shot for his average. He must improve for the Olympic qualifier, since it is the first preparatory tournament and there is always a little pressure,” Reiter commented to JIT after his student registered 330 and 334 in the two parts into which the test is divided.

Juan José Santiesteban scored 644 points and was in 15th place, while Javier Vega rounded out the 643 that reserved them the 17th place. Regarding their performances, the coach commented that they need to manage anxiety to achieve better records, although those achieved correspond to what scheduled for the first official presentation of the season.

The main commitment was set in the continental competition that from April 9 to 14 will distribute individual tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the Colombian city of Medellín.

«We take advantage of the preparation events to release tensions and find the optimal form. “We remain focused on achieving a good performance in Medellín,” Reiter acknowledged.

As a team, the final sum was 1,951 stripes, which places them as Colombia’s rival in the semifinal match this Wednesday. On the other side of the organization chart, Brazil awaits the winner of the fight between Panama and Chile.

In the individual modality, scheduled for a day later, Hugo will compete with the Panamanian Francisco Osorio, Juan José against the local Gustavo Paulino Dos Santos and Javier against the Chilean Ricardo Soto.

These matches correspond to the phase of 32 competitors. If they advance to the round of 16 they would face a more complex panorama, especially Javier and Juan José, who would face the host Marcus D’Almeida and the Colombian Santiago Arcila, in that order.

The possible duel with D’Almeida, number one in the world ranking, would be a repetition of the one seen at the XIX Pan American Games in Santiago 2023, when the Cuban signed an impressive victory.
