Controversial Referee Decisions Overshadow Racing’s 1-1 Draw Against Defensa y Justicia in League Cup Clash

Racing drew 1-1 against Defensa y Justicia in the Cilindro de Avellaneda and moved away from the qualification positions to the quarterfinals of the League Cup. In a match that featured numerous situations in the goals and referee Darío Herrera took on a special role in the second half by making decisions that marked the course of the match.

In 10 minutes, three situations were recorded in which Lucas Novelli, in charge of the VAR, had to intervene to review actions that ended in a goal. The first controversy ended in a goal by Adrián Maravilla Martínez 10 minutes into the second half, Santiago Sosa opened to the left for the position of Maximiliano Salas, who stopped the ball and sent the center to the position of the former Instituto forward, who converted the much.

In the midst of the celebrations of the Academy players, the VAR analyzed the action prior to Maravilla’s goal and detected an advanced position by Salas. The winger was one step ahead of the line of the last defender, so there was a success after the lines were drawn.

The second situation that was reviewed in Ezeiza was that of Defensa y Justicia’s goal, scored by Santiago Ramos Mingo at 18 minutes. Once the ball entered the goal defended by Gabriel Arias, the number 1 assistant, Diego Bonfá, raised his flag indicating the offside. At first glance, the visiting player’s prohibited position was not seen, but once again the VAR ended up helping Herrera to correctly validate Halcón’s goal.

The third play that ended with the ball inside the goal and that was invalidated is the one that generated the most controversy in Avellaneda. At 20 minutes a cross arrived from the left from Gabriel Rojas and, after a chest pass from Salas, Facundo Mura took a shot that went into the corner of Cristopher Fiermarin’s goal.

However, once again Herrera’s whistle stopped the celebration. The judge detected an attack violation by Maravilla Martínez on Alexis Soto. There was an error here, since the push did not have the force applied to destabilize the defender and give identity to the foul. The goal should have been validated.

Finally, there was the action prior to Juanfer Quintero’s goal free kick, which ended up being the equalizer for Racing, but there was an intentional handball so the Colombian’s goal was out of the question. Beyond the mistake in the disallowed goal against Mura, Herrera completed a good game.
