Collapse in bean prices gives the coup de grâce to producers in Sinaloa – El Sol de México

CULIACAN. The price of beans in Sinaloa for this 2024 agricultural cycle plummeted, since in two months it went from almost 40 pesos per kilogram to 20 pesos or less in some cases, accused the president of Campesinos Unidos de Sinaloa, Baltazar Valdez Armenta, who points out that There was an overproduction of grain due to lack of water.

“People chose to plant beans and chickpeas knowing that we could saturate the markets, but there was no option. However, grains are required, and unfortunately we do not have pre-established marketing schemes, so that the government can compensate producers when buyers lower our prices,” he noted.

For the 2024 agricultural cycle, 95 thousand hectares of beans were planted in Sinaloa, 85 thousand of the yellow variety and 10 thousand more of pinto beans, much higher than the 32 thousand hectares that were planted in the 2023 cycle.

The agricultural leader explained that the outlook is difficult since the marketing of beans has always been conflictive because its consumption is slow and has decreased, according to the government’s own statistics.

“The scenario at the moment is already difficult, the harvests are already at their peak and buyers, seeing more volume, go further down,” he declared.

The agricultural leader pointed out that the guaranteed price of 21 pesos per kilogram of beans is only for subsistence producers who plant up to five hectares, but this price does not benefit irrigated farmers.

He explained that with the fall in prices of the variety of beans in the state, a meeting was requested with the federal authorities to reach agreements and face the economic contingency of producers in the state.

At an upcoming meeting of the State Council, they will ask the federal government for resources, support or strategies to cushion the market contingency currently faced in grain production.

Baltazar Valdez assured that it was the same need for the lack of water that increased grain production in beans and chickpeas, since planting more corn or wheat was not profitable.

The producers are asking for an emerging program with the federal government, with which price drops are compensated or controlled, since last year there were prices between 24 to 25 pesos for a variety of yellow beans and there was no harvest for pintos.

Given the current oversupply in the bean harvest in Sinaloa, prices were not maintained, which is why the sales price per ton remains uncertain, this despite the fact that the previous year it was possible to sell between 24 to 25 thousand pesos per ton.

Baltazar Valdez Armentía announced that for the commercialization of beans, there are some states of the republic such as Zacatecas and Chihuahua that have turned to Sinaloa to purchase the grain so that they can have seeds for their next sowing, which is spring-summer. However, so far no direct negotiation has been achieved between producers.

He added that the state of Zacatecas alone requires around 20 thousand tons and Sinaloa still does not have that amount harvested, if in case they could manage to have 10 thousand tons.
