Clashes between fans during Padova-Catania, the police on the pitch – Football

Urban guerrilla scenes at the Euganeo stadium during the first leg of the Serie C Italian Cup Padua-Catania. A group of Sicilian ultras, during the interval, broke down the gate of their sector, entering the stand occupied by the biancoscudati, throwing smoke bombs and destroying the banners. Others invaded the pitch, throwing firecrackers from there. The police forces intervened immediately, with charges in the north curve to stop the violence. The officers, after restoring calm, took away about ten Catania fans. The match resumed after a 15-minute suspension. There are three Catania ultras who were taken to the police station after the pitch invasion and the clashes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the clashes.

The match then ended with Padova beating Catania 2-1. The return is scheduled for next April 2nd in the Sicilian city. For the Venetians Palombi scored in the 12th minute and Crisetig in the 25th minute. The Etna team closed the gap with Monaco in the 22nd minute of the second half.

The Lega Pro condemns the Padua-Catania clashes – The Lega Pro expressed “firm condemnation of the events that occurred during the first leg final of the Serie C Italian Cup between Padova and Catania”. “Incidents of this kind, which have nothing to do with sport, will never find space or excuses within competitions organized by Lega Pro”, underlines the League in a note. “It’s sad that an evening of celebration and fairness on the pitch was ruined, at half-time, by the excesses of some fans. We strongly stigmatize what happened. Thanks to the intervention of the police, other clashes were averted”, says the president of the Lega Pro Matteo Marani.

Catania condemns protagonists of clashes in Padua – “Catania Football Club stigmatizes the behavior of the troublemakers involved in the clashes and riots at the ‘Euganeo’ stadium. We firmly and categorically condemn any form of violence, expressing full solidarity with the police.” This is what the Etna club writes in a statement published on its website, after the clashes that took place this evening at the ‘Euganeo’ stadium in Padua, during half-time of the first leg of the Serie C Italian Cup.
