The 2019 World Series MVP hasn’t pitched since June 2022 due to injuries that derailed his career. He still has three seasons remaining on his seven-year contract worth US$245 million.

Strasburg decided to retire at the end of August, but the Nationals announced in September that there would be no press conference. Owner Mark Lerner mentioned in a press release at that time that his team expected to see Strasburg in spring camp.

The 35-year-old right-hander did not report to the Nationals’ facility in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Strasburg receives 35 million per year, including $11,428,571 per year deferred at 1% interest. The deferred money is payable in equal installments of $26,666,667 on July 1 in 2027, 2028 and 2029, with an interest payment of $3,999,974 on December 31, 2029.

Restructuring money owed to Strasbourg could be part of a pension deal.

The Nationals also selected the contracts of right-handed pitchers Matt Barnes and Derek Law and outfielders Eddie Rosario and Jesse Winker from AAA Rochester.

The Nationals also placed right-handers Cade Cavalli and Mason Thompson and left-hander Jose Ferrer on the 60-day injured list. Outfielder Stone Garrett was placed on the injured list for 10 days retroactive to March 25.
