Christian Streich: Reflecting on Farewell Announcement and Future Plans as Freiburg’s Coach

Christian Streich also spoke about what the days after the farewell announcement felt like and what could happen to him from the summer onwards on Thursday. Freiburg’s coach also announced new players.

“I’m not much of a networker, there weren’t hundreds of messages,” said Streich about the time after his departure announcement on Monday last week. But he has already noticed the extensive reporting on his approaching end as Freiburg coach, written as well as in images and audio – at least in parts. That was “mostly nice”, only some pictures and shots in “excited poses” could have been left out if Streich liked it.

He often watches the “Tagesschau” or the “heute-journal”, and overall it was a bit “weird that such things come up everywhere, because it’s actually you, otherwise you see other people.” Otherwise, he doesn’t watch his own performances or interviews: “I don’t rewind to see what I did so that I can do it differently next time. I don’t study it.” There was a bit more public excitement for two days last week.

“I received a few very nice text messages and very few calls. And then the message with Julian came, then it continued, that was good, then I was able to look at others,” said Streich, who finds it “extremely gratifying” that his former captain and current coaching colleague Julian Schuster will succeed him.

I would be really surprised if I were to set up shop somewhere in July.

Christain Streich about his near future

Schuster will bring in the new energy that Streich deemed necessary in his farewell video. In addition, there will be further changes: “What’s important are player signings because the club now needs new energy. That will happen, I’m really happy about that because we were able to discuss it together and have conversations. It looks positive out of.”

“I have no plans, no drawer”

However, when the players announced by Streich come to SC, he will no longer be there. And what’s next for him? “The fact that I’m no longer with the guys I worked with for so long is simply something personal. I’ll have to see how I deal with it,” says Streich: “I don’t have any plans, I don’t have a box , which I can open because I was far too involved in the day’s work.” He wants to keep the focus on sport as much as possible during his eight farewell performances in the league.

And then he really doesn’t know what exactly he wants to do and how he will fare in the new phase of his life. In any case, he sees the loss of the structures and processes in his coaching job that he has known for 29 years as a major challenge in his new everyday life. But it will be necessary at least initially – in order to have a break: “The last two years with the many games have been exceptionally great so far, but they were brutally energetically intense. That’s why I can’t even say what it’s like in July . It all depends on how much time and what I need to regenerate and recover to some extent.”

New job from July? “I must have found a special remedy”

Streich remains fully convinced of the decision to quit at the end of the season: “No one has dealt with it more than me. So now was the time. And that remains the right thing to do, no matter what happens.” Since he didn’t know, as he emphasized several times, what the future would feel like without the coaching job at SC, Streich explicitly didn’t want to rule anything out for his future.

Not another job as a trainer either, although he also confirmed: “I would be really surprised if I were to pitch somewhere in July. Then I must have somehow found a special remedy that works quickly in regeneration. I don’t know. whether it’s on the market and if it’s on the market it’s probably unaffordable, or illegal.”
